The Whimsy of Maneki Neko: Embracing Your Inner Child (and Broken Beads)

Do you remember the smell of the sticker shop?

If you grew up in the 70s or 80s, you know the one. It was a sensory explosion of “scratch-and-sniff” rolls, neon fuzzy posters, and that specific, glossy scent of a fresh Lisa Frank notebook.

For me, it was a tiny shop called “Fluf N’ Stuf” It was overflowing with plushies, adorable stationary, and rolls of stickers we’d buy by the square. It was pure, unadulterated cute.

As adults, we’re often told our jewelry should be “sophisticated” or “understated.” Well, today in the Bijoux Chat studio, we are politely declining that advice. We are channeling our inner sticker-collecting child.

We are styling the Palace of Amber Maneki Neko, and we are doing it with maximum sparkle, maximum pink, and zero apologies.

The Beckoning Cat (Heritage meets Hot Pink)

The Maneki Neko (or “Beckoning Cat”) is a traditional Japanese talisman believed to bring good luck to the owner. With my Japanese heritage, this motif has always held a quiet, cultural significance for me.

But for this design, I didn’t want “quiet.”

I wanted to capture the feeling of those sticker rolls. I surrounded her with hearts, candy-colored pinks, and faux pearls. It’s a design that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a visual sugar rush.

The Art of the Fix (Wabi-Sabi)

Now, a little secret about this specific cat.

She is imperfect.

When I found this rare Palace of Amber charm, she was damaged. She had lost the tiny silver bell that hangs from her collar. A “beige” collector might have passed on her, or kept her hidden in a drawer.

But I saw an opportunity.

In a moment of creative improvisation, I took a piece of thin silver wire and the tiniest murano millefleur bead I had, and I gave her a new bell. It’s a little mismatch. It’s a little quirky. I feel like it really works for her.

This is the beauty of Wabi-Sabi—finding beauty in imperfection. Because I fixed her, she is no longer just a “Palace of Amber” production piece. She is my Maneki Neko. She has a story.

This bracelet is my adult homage to “Fluf N’ Stuf.” It’s a reminder that joy is a valid design strategy.

If you have a charm that’s a little broken, fix it with flair. If you want to wear neon pink hearts next to your silver, do it. Your inner child is still in there, and she probably wants to add a little more sparkle.
